Hey Turkey!

November 20th, 2008, 4:33 pm by Gretchen Losi

At our home, Thanksgiving tradition dictates a huge meal!
Turkey, homemade cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, green beans, corn, magic squash (I’ll get back to this in a minute), homemade biscuits, ambrosia salad, homemade pumpkin pie, and the list goes on.
I like to cook. They like to eat. O.k… I like to eat too.
Back to the Magic Squash.
It’s just an acorn squash that I bake after cutting it in half and placing a giant ball of sage sausage in the middle. The sausage cooks inside the squash giving it a yummy taste.
But to my kids.. it was always “Magic Squash!”
They never saw mommy cut it in half and put the sausage inside before baking.
Then after it was baked, I’d call them into the kitchen and we would all put our hands on it and do this goofy chant, “Magic squash-magic squash, give a sausage seed!”
I’d unwrap the steaming foil and pretend to cut it open and voila! There would be the sausage seed.
They believed this was some sort of Thanksgiving Day magic until they were in middle school.
Alas those days are now behind me.
This will be my first Thanksgiving without one of my children chanting for a sausage seed.
Darn them for growing up. I’m sure I never gave them my permission.
The magic will be sorely missed.
Our other tradition; We hold hands and pray at the table, each taking our turn at giving thanks for something in our lives.
It sounds campy, but it’s probably my favorite part of the day.
Then there’s the…..Football. ALL DAY LONG. The one tradition I could easily live without. But hey, it makes the boys happy, (and by boys, I mean my 52 year-old husband… love ya honey!)
And that is Thanksgiving at the Losi house, minus the four trips back to the kitchen for turkey sandwiches and late night pumpkin pie.
Tell me about YOUR traditions! Come on.. don’t be shy. I shared my sausage seed story with you. I want to know what magic happens at your home on Thanksgiving Day. Goofy, silly or boring as you may think it is.. I bet others out there can relate. And be sure to share those Thanksgiving pictures on our Web site by posting them at www.VVDailyPress.com.
And while you’re at it… give a shout out to whoever or whatever you’re most thankful for.
For me.. it’s a healthy loving family (gag… totally cliche’ I know. But I haven’t ALWAYS had that in my life. So it really is special to me). And a job. In today’s economic climate, with newspapers laying off journalists and the like by the hundreds.. believe me when I say, I am thankful for my career with Freedom Communications Inc. at the Daily Press.
Wait.. I have one more cliche’ before I go…
I’m also thankful for you. All the readers of our paper.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Gretchen
